Fine marine portrait off St Mary's Island and painted well before the lighthouse was built in 1898 (not counting the one built in 1664 from the stones of the priory)

Born in Scotswood, near Newcastle, he painted mainly in London after 1838. Doubtless this painting is dated from before that, being a local scene as well as having a slightly 'primitive' charm to it. Not signed but well labelled on the back by the well respected O'Mell Gallery in London - their 'Exhibition of Marine Paintings' No.19.
