Stanley Cursiter (1887-1976)
Stanley Cursiter CBE FRSE FRIAS FEIS RSA RSW was a Scottish painter of landscapes, portraits, and figures. Born in Kirkwall, Orkney, he moved to Edinburgh in 1904 and studied at the Edinburgh College of Art. Awarded a military OBE, in the years after WW1 he returned to Edinburgh to work as an artist and as keeper, then Director, of the National Gallery of Scotland. Cursiter played an important role in introducing post-impressionist and futurism to the country and did much to promote Scottish art, researching, writing, and consolidating the National Galleries' Scottish collections. Appointed King's Painter and Limner in Scotland (1948–76). Widely held including, among others, at the: National Galleries of Scotland; National Portrait Gallery of Scotland; Orkney Museum; Fleming collection; Government Art collection.
