Norman Prescott-Davies (1862-1915)
A Cloudy Morning

Medium: Oil on canvas
Size without frame: 20.5" x 16.0"
Size including frame: 31.0" x 27.0"
SOLD

A beautiful auburn-haired, blue-eyed, rosy-cheeked, classically-dressed woman looks wistfully out to sea from the terrace above the poplars. In the frieze below her elbow a cherub holding a laurel wreath which, if Prescott-Davies intended as Eros/Cupid a reference to love's power to inspire virtue and poetry.

Prescott-Davis painting to a "toga and terrace" formula perhaps but this is a lovely, captivating, example of his work. Signed and dated (1892) lower left and recessed in a heavy period frame.
