Once upon a time, not so long ago, there was a little girl... Striking portrait by Joseph Mordecai of a young girl holding her favourite doll - a one-eyed, golly rag doll which, while not acceptable today, were once commonplace. Mordecai painted Royal family members and celebrities of the day and this girl's poise and presence, together with a suspicion the doll is an early Steiff, is suggestive of a well-heeled family. Beautiful painting and a record of the past and changing attitudes. Undated, though the James Bourlet & Sons, Ltd., gilt frame label suggests after 1911. Signed, lower left.
