Superb, atmospheric, and large Carmichael of the brave men of the Tynemouth lifeboat rowing out to aid a ship in trouble under stormy skies and high seas. In a storm on 23 October 1864 the schooner, the John Slater (built in Barrow 1862), lost its mast in tempestuous seas and the Tynemouth lifeboat, the Constance, launched to assist. The Constance was the first boat of the Tynemouth life-boat station of the RNLI founded only a few years earlier.
Fabulous and very detailed depiction of the rescue attempt with onlookers lining the walls of Tynemouth Castle and Priory and long demolished lighthouse (1898) watching as the tragedy unfolds and beyond the High and Low lights and many ships, their sails furled, sheltering in the harbour. Signed and dated 1864, lower right, one of Carmichael's last paintings and among his finest.
