John Wallace (1841-1905)
John Wallace was a British artist born in Ryton, Durham. After school, he joined his father’s firm as apprentice then joiner but found success as a builder and property developer before taking up painting in his late twenties. Wallace was a prominent and early member of the Bewick Club, which was established by local artists in 1884. He painted many scenes around North East England and especially in the Tyne valley. Wallace exhibited at the Laing and Royal Academy (3) and today his works can be seen at the Shipley and Laing Art galleries.
