Edwin Ellis (1842-1895)
Edwin Ellis RBA was a Nottingham born English painter in oils and watercolours.He took evening classes in his late teens at the Government School of Design in Nottingham while working as a draughtsman in the family lace-making business but by 1867 he was living in London working as an artist. He concentrated on marines, coastal life and coastal landscapes and has been described as 'a brilliant colourist,' who was dedicated to conveying the 'invigorating and exhilarating effects of the sea.' Widely held in museums and art galleries including those of Nottingham, Sheffield, Bradford, Plymouth, Leeds and Glasgow.
