Christiaan Cornelis Kannemans (1812-1884)
Christiaan Cornelis Kannemans was a Dutch painter who specialized in seascapes, river and harbour views. He received lessons from Jacob Bernardus Frederiks but was largely self-taught, taking up painting as a full-time profession in the 1840’s following encouragement by the Dutch painter of church interiors Johannes Bosboom. His early exhibitions won him admirers, including King Willem II, as well as sponsorship enabling him to travel to, and study, England, the French and Dutch coasts. At an exhibition in Dunkirk in 1853 he received "the great imperial Silver Medal" for which, endearingly, a large crowd in his home town of Breda honoured him with a torchlight procession.
