William Traies (1789-1872)
William Traies was a painter in oils of romantic views of the West Country. Born at Crediton, Devon, in 1789, he worked as a clerk at the Post Office in Exeter but spent much of his free time sketching the surrounding area. Traies’s accurate and evocative Devon landscapes gained him several patrons and caused him to be known as the ‘Claude of Devon.’ He exhibited four landscape works at the Royal Academy.
