William Anslow Thornley was a masterful marine artist of mainly coastal scenes. They were often of the Thames and the South of England, the West Country and the Yorkshire coast, but also of several nearby countries. He mainly painted quite small pictures, but occasionally larger scenes as this one, at 16 x 24 inches, sight size. This has produced an impressive art work showing the harbour of the well-loved coastal town of Whitby in the distance.
