Fascinating watercolour of the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Calton Hill, Edinburgh, which we think was painted from the valley below Arthur's Seat, around the Hunter's Bog area. The buildings date the painting to around 1840 with the Royal High School and Playfair's grand neoclassical houses of Regent Terrace and National Monument all relatively recently constructed. The Governor's House and infamous Calton jail are, perhaps tactfully, silhouetted. Time has faded the colours a little but still a lovely historical painting. Signed, lower right.
