"Land of brown heath and shaggy wood, land of mountain and the flood" Turner has inscribed on the back of this painting of the River Leny in spate. From Sir Walter Scott's poem, Breathes there the man, suggesting, possibly, that Turner identified with the poem and its patriotic sentiment. In excellent condition, signed lower right, and inscribed signed and dated, 1920, verso.
'O Caledonia! stern and wild, from Highland midge where can I hide' :-)
