William Hemsley (1819-1893)

Son of an architect, William Hemsley started work in his father's office but soon left to become a professional artist. His speciality was 'Cottage life', so invariably genre scenes particularly with or of children. His work often had a 'fun' aspect to them. Hemsley exhibited widely including at Suffolk Street, the British Institute and 20 paintings at the Royal Academy. He was elected to the Society of British Artists (RBA) and today his paintings are held by, among others, the Welcome Collection, Ferens Art Gallery, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Leeds Museums and Galleries, and Victoria Art Gallery.
