William Hatherell (1855-1928)
William Hatherell ROI RI was a Victorian British painter and illustrator born in Bristol. Hatherell studied at the Royal Academy Schools and specialised in genres, historical and Arthurian legend. He illustrated many books as well as for magazines The Graphic, Harpers and The Century. Known for his subtle shading, expressive faces and gestures, Hatherell refused to be pressured by publishers and rush his work by lowering his standards. Represented today in the Welcome Collection, the Tate, Cardiff City Hall and Imperial War Museums.
