Built by JT Eltringham & Co, South Shields and completed in January 1909 the Great Emperor tug worked the Tyne for 50 years. Painted here by William Boyce in the year of its launch with, one would assume, the Danish flagged full-rigged ship under tow having the same name. But, we think Boyce may have employed a little artistic licence as the paddle tug, Great Emperor built in 1866 by Readhead Softley & Co, also of South Shields, also worked the Tyne, but sank in 1902. Cleaned and conserved and in superb condition, signed and dated lower right.
NB. Currently on loan and available to view at South Shields Museum and Art Gallery exhibition on shipbuilding on South Tyneside (Spring/Summer 2022)
