Tom McGuinness (1926-2006)
Tom McGuinness was born in County Durham in 1926, the year of the general strike. He enrolled at Darlington School of Art for whilst working in the mines, and his art teacher suggested a bolder style which influenced his work thereafter. By 1948 Tom was painting seriously, renting a studio close to his home - a shed which he lit by Tilley lamp. Tom took his portfolio to London and was offered a 7 year apprenticeship as a commercial artist, but he decided to return to work in the coal mines. He kept paintingm and in 1958 he had his first true solo exhibition. Tom did not leave mining until 1983. He became the artist in residence at Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station in 1984, and had work commissioned by Barclay's Bank, Durham and even St. Mary's Church, Bishop Auckland, for the stained glass windows.
