A powerful image painted on artist's board. The unusable frame has been replaced but the original backing has been retained with his signature, date 1901 and wax stamp of authenticity. There is a faded mark of a missing old label so it is very possible this was a Royal Academy example as he exhibited, without a break, 266 paintings from 1833 until 1902. A late example, it neverthless displays the Dutch School influence apparent in his style.
