Thomas Sewell Robins (1810-1880)
Thomas Sewell Robins was a British marine and landscapes artist born in Devonport (Plymouth). He trained in Royal Academy Schools, receiving instruction from, among others, Thomas Phillips and J.M.W. Turner. ‘Robins was a highly accomplished painter of marine subjects and conveyed a vivid sense of atmospheric effect’ (Hardie). He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street, British Institution, and frequently at the New Watercolour Society (>300). Today his works are in the collections of the: Victoria and Albert Museum; National Maritime Museum; Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and; Brighton and Hove Museum.
