This is a charmingly gruesome watercolour by Rowlandson, depicting the body snatchers Burke & Hare, who committed 16 murders in Edinburgh in the first part of the 19th Century. They sold the bodies for medical research, for which there was a great demand at the time. Frost and Reed label to the reverse and it is believed that this picture was used to produce engravings at the time.
