Thomas Marie Madawaska Hemy (1852-1937)
Thomas Marie Madawaska Hemy, the brother of Bernard Benedict Hemy and Charles Napier Hemy, was educated in Newcastle and his early years were spent at sea where he acquired a love of everything to do with the sea, ships and sailing. On returning to Tyneside Hemy studied under William Cosens Way and he lived at North Shields, Northumberland, before finally settling in London towards the end of the century. Hemy painted in oils and watercolours, most often painting the Northumbrian coast, river scenes and figure studies.
