A major force in the early years of the Royal Academy this view painted in 1819 is possibly drawn from a similar example entitled 'Ullswater from the grounds of J. Marshall Esq. Hollshead, Cumberland.' This beautiful example is inscribed on the reverse - 'Ullswater from St. James Chair, painted by T.C. Hofland in 1819' and may have been commissioned as a result of the Academy exhibition.
