A wonderful and rare example of Bell's landscaping and the reverse tells it all!
Bell is capturing a childhood memory when he lived in Newcastle and painted the scene as if he were playing with friends aged 12 years old ! The scene was memory assisted and prompted by what remained in a return visit in 1855 but was painted in 1887. As usual with pictures around these dates he was not shy in pronouncing Queen Victoria's liking of his works, though these were his more usual marines.
