Often Birch gave little paintings and sketches, made while on fishing trips, to friends and aquaintances of similar tastes and pleasures. These were invariably signed verso and this certainly falls into that category.
Described on the reverse as to location and signed by Birch, it also describes the scene as 'near The Carnarvon Arms Hotel'. This was built by The Earl of Carnarvon in the late 1800s to serve his estate and the incoming rail passengers. The hotel offered free trout fishing to guests which would have appealed to the artist! It looks, also, as if he has made a note that the painting is his and is luggage to Penzance! Birch also adds the title of R.W.S. to his signature so this makes it post 1914 and probably close to our intuitive guess of 1920 - 1930. It amply displays his leaning toward capturing colour and light for which he is well known. A delightful lilttle sketch beautifully presented and a little piece added to the jigsaw of the life of an artist and fisherman.
