Robert Gemmell Hutchison (1860-1936)
Born and educated in Edinburgh, Robert Gemmell Hutchison R.B.A., R.O.I., R.S.A., R.S.W began his career as an engraver of seals and studied art under William MacTaggart at the Board of Manufactures School of Art. He was particularly influenced by the Dutch School and his real speciality was painting children, invariably in Scottish coastal landscapes, in a more and more impressionist style as his life progressed. Hutchinson was a prolific artist and exhibited very widely with, for instance, 55 exhibits at the Royal Academy. As an important Scottish painter (of the early 20th century) his works are held in the museums and art galleries of: Glasgow, Paisley, Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Oldham, the Dick Institute, the Scottish Maritime Institute, and the National Galleries of Scotland.
