Painted in the 1870/80's we think this portrait is of a young, pretty, if solemn, Breton woman wearing a traditional lace headdress, ruff collar, and grey/black tunic. Two of Richard Alldridge's RA exhibits were titled 'Bayonne' and 'Bavarian peasant,' but while we don't believe the headdress is Basque or German it suggests Alldridge travelled, and painted, in Europe. The significance of the medallion (watch?), if any, sadly lost to time. In excellent condition, signed lower left.
