Nicholas Chevalier (1828-1902)
Born in May 1828 in St Petersburg of a Russian mother and a Swiss father; died in London in 1902. Followed his parents to Lausanne and studied at the musee Arland at the age of 17. Spent time in Munich, London and Italy then in Australia and New Zealand. Painter of landscapes and historical subjects and later also in watercolours. After accompanying Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second son, on a world tour, he settled in London.
