A fabulous Birket Foster watercolour. Painted from Prebend's Bridge, the River Wear flows past Durham Cathedral and Castle towards Framwellgate Bridge in a scene not much changed today. Serene as evening approaches but smoke rising from distant chimney stacks and the fulling mill on the riverbank hints at industry. Wonderful! Monogrammed, lower right.
