Louis William Wain (1860-1939)
Louis William Wain was a highly successful London born artist best known for his drawings and paintings of anthropomorphized cats engaging in every human activity. Wain provided illustrations for the Illustrated London News, other journals, and illustrated over a hundred children's books. A proflic artist he was impractical in business, often taken advantage of, and so didn't truly profit from his fame. Always seen as slightly eccentric he was later certified insane and committed to a pauper ward at Springfield Mental Hospital, Tooting, before high profile supporters, among them H.G. Wells and the Prime Minister, saw to it he was transferred to Bethlem, then Napsbury Hospitals. Today his work can be seen in the Welcome Collection, Bethlem Museum and V&A Museum.
