John Wilson Carmichael (1799-1868)
Off Seaham
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size without frame: 24.0" x 36.0"
SOLD
An early(ish) and superb example of Carmichael at his near best and with a good view of Seaham Harbour in the background. Bears a Northumberland Institution exhibition label dated 1836, No. 2. Also a label of the respected Parker Gallery, London who were established eighteen years before the Royal Academy! The arched rock to the right which looks at first glance to be Marsden Rock is in fact a similar structure nicknamed Hill 60 by first world war veterans from a tunnelling spoil heap near Ypres! This painting is shown as reserved for inclusion in our forthcoming exhibition.
