It is tempting to believe the inspiration for this wonderful landscape came from Carmichael's extensive visits up the Tyne Valley sketching and painting for his illustrations in the 'Newcastle to Carlisle Railway' publication, from which came some wonderful views of the early railway network. It would not be true to say this is a departure from his marine work as he was equally at home with landscape and often produced views of fine stately homes and estates. The view is identified by the artist Ben Haslam, in whose premises we now exhibit, who has also painted in the environs. Signed and dated 1847.
