John Varley (1778-1842)
Landscape and architectural watercolourist. Exhibited for first time at Royal Academy in 1798 and then until 1843. Helped found the Old Watercolour Society at which he exhibited a total of 739 works. Published on drawing, perspective and also on astrology. Reputation as art teacher of such artists as W. H. Hunt, Copley Fielding, David Cox and many other well known artists. Surprisingly, he died in poverty.
