Built for Watts, Milburn and Co., London by Charles Michell and Co., Low Walker, the 890 tonne iron-hulled cargo ship Brazilian (WSGH, 62328) was completed in June 1869. Powered by sail and a screw propeller driven by an 130hp engine, also made in Newcastle by Thompson and Co. It seems the SS Brazilian became one of the first ships in the 1871 formed Hamburg Sud cargo line providing a monthly shipping service to Brazil and Argentina. Signed and dated, lower right.
