A bright John Scott ship portrait of a barque, the Express, leaving Tynemouth. The blue flag on the main mast, which Scott often paints on his ship portraits, is the Blue Peter, signalling the Express is departing port. Typically Scott paints his subjects in two views and while the vessel on the right looks similar the different flagging suggests it may be another ship. Several barques were named the Express when this portrait was painted in 1853. The 1839 New Brunswick built Express, a 399 tonne barque, which at that time ran between Newcastle and the West Indies. A similar sized barque (368 tonnes) named the Express was built in 1853, owned by J. Crisp, and sailed between Sunderland and the Mediterranean. We don't know where it was built but with a home port of South Shields it is very possible this painting commemorates its maiden voyage. Signed and dated lower right. Provenance: Louisianna State Museum.
