John Scott (1802-1885)
John Scott was British artist who lived and worked in Newcastle. Predominantly known for his paintings of ships - usually steamers, brigs, clippers and barques - off the British coast. Frequently he depicted the local seas off Tynemouth and Whitby. Scott's oil painting talent enabled him to create an authentic 'salty' atmosphere in his paintings. The vessel is usually shown in one or two positions at sea with the coastline in the distance. Many of Scott's marine paintings are now held in private or museum collections, and rarely do they come to the market for sale.
