John MacDonald Aiken (1880 - 1961)
John MacDonald Aiken was born in Aberdeen and studied at Gray’s School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He became head of Gray’s in 1911 before serving in the First World War. He was awarded the silver medal at the Paris Salon for his portrait of Harry Townend (1923) and he was elected to the Royal Society of Etchers and the Royal Scottish Academy. He exhibited regularly: RA (925 works), RSA (127), RI (8), RE (19), RSW (2). His work is represented in Aberdeen, Dundee, and Perth Art Galleries.
