John Ley Pethybridge (1865 - 1905)

John Pethybridge came from a family who were founders of two Cornish and Devon banks during the 1800s. They were a very influential family, who did much work to improve life for all in the two counties.

Pethybridge exhibited at the Royal Academy, training in St John's Wood and Bruges before studying under the great animal painter, John Emms and then spending two years with the Newlyn School.

Pethybridge was born into a strongly Methodist family in 1865 and married in 1902, settling in Stratton. In addition to being an artist and illustrator, he was also an accomplished poet and musician. This painting is included in a recently published E-book of all his listed works.
