John Henry Mole (1814-1886)
John Henry Mole was a landscape painter and watercolourist. Born in Alnwick, Northumberland, he later lived in London. He worked as a clerk in a solicitors office in Newcastle, but gave it up for miniature painting. He exhibited miniatures at the Royal Academy 1845, 1846 and 1879. Later he turned to landscape particularly in watercolour. Although he is best known as a painter of children in landscapes, it should really be the other way round, since his children are generally the weakest points of the composition. His backgrounds are extremely well painted, often with a preponderance of rich greens. He was elected an Associate of the New Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1847 and a Member the following year. In 1884 he was elected Vice President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. In 1883 he was elected a Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
