It is not often we've seen a Slater dated so precisely suggesting perhaps that the wild sea he has painted here was an unusual phenomenon (even in the North East) of an early summer storm. The green colour of the sea is also rare but does occur on inshore waters under certain light conditions. Given that it would take a strong wind to produce such turbulence in the sea, and the size of this canvas, it is a good bet Slater had this canvas anchored down by rocks as he painted. And, by the proximity to the shore, one imagines his souwesters received quite a drenching. A large painting that needs space and is best appreciated on a good-sized wall. Signed and dated, lower left.
