John Falconar Slater 'Newcastle 1929 Exhibition', oil on board, signed and dated 1929. A more restrained impressionistic style than is usual and an unusual subject for Slater, this painting marks the North East Coast Exhibition - a world's fair held in what is now Newcastle Exhibition Park, May-October 1929. Several buildings were constructed for the event but we can't tell which of them this might be/have been. Four million people visited and here some of them pass through a dark arch with the bright lights of attractions beyond. Three of Slater's paintings featured in the exhibition including the eight foot view of 'Hexham' now in the Laing.
