First of a lovely pair of town scenes by this London artist. Now identified by an observant and knowledgeable client as Chester Square, Belgravia, London S.W.1 - Lady Margaret Thatcher lives nearby - Prime real estate indeed!
The painting has been slightly trimmed by a previous framer, but the signature is fully legible and dated 1858. A very interesting and imposing painting, for its size, and well framed. John Edwin Oldfield comes close to being classed as an early English watercolourist and examples of his work are uncommon.
*Spot the deliberate mistake!The mount is entitled J.R.Oldfield.This is now corrected!
