John Atkinson (1863-1924)
Sheep washing, Rothbury
Medium: Watercolour
Size without frame: 15.0" x 21.0"
SOLD
Bought from a local estate, and always believed to be a scene in the Northumbrian Hills by Rothbury on the River Coquet, this is an unusual glimpse of farming life and when first purchased we thought it to show sheep dipping. Corrected by a friend versed in country ways he tells us it is sheep washing so the ‘canny’ farmers are sprucing up the stock for market in the hope of making a few extra pints of beer!
