Newcastle born Watson worked and exhibited from Staithes in 1903 and the architecture and style of the background buildings certainly suggest this painting is of that period and area, but not of Staithes; above Whitby, perhaps, where the river is much wider? A strong and imposing painting. An excellent example by this quite rare Northern artist.
