James Alder (1920-2007)
James Alder was a Newcastle born artist, illustrator, and sculptor renowned for his Natural history and wildlife illustration. Aged 12 he won an art scholarship having his first exhibition at school, following which his headmaster sent him out to draw every day and gave him his own class to teach art aged 13. Following the war, he became a well known TV personality (Looks Natural), a leading authority on the Dipper (bird), senior consultant sculptor of birds and flowers for Royal Worcester Porcelain
Co. and president of th Natural History Society of Northumbria. James Alder was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II to produce a book of the birds and flora surrounding Balmoral. The Queen Mother was so impressed, she asked him to do the same for the castle of Mey, her Scottish retreat, "The Birds and Flowers of the Castle of Mey."
