A great painting (including in its size!) with a wonderful sense of movement and energy. Leisten was a talented Dusseldorf artist with a broad reportoire that included equestrian scenes and portraits. Here, a striking composition of hunting on horseback, the riders certainly German, possibly noble, galloping across a moor led by their dogs pursuing a stag in the fading light of dusk. Leisten often painted Tryolean scenes and this could be one of them but we are not convinced the hats are typical of the Tyrol/Bavaria. Signed lower right.
