Henry Hetherington Emmerson (1831-1895)
H H Emmerson was a landscape, seascape and portrait painter in oil and watercolour. Born at South Shields, he attended the Union British Schools, which encouraged him to draw marine subjects. For a short period he became a pilot but left this in favour of study at the Government school of Design in Newcastle. He also went to study in Paris. Most of his work was done in watercolour, portraying local landscapes and nautical situations. He did do some atypical pieces in the form of portraits, among these a self portrait which is in the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle.
