Oriel College is the fifth oldest constituent college of the University of Oxford. The oldest royal foundation in Oxford, it was founded in 1324 by Adam de Brome under the patronage of King Edward II. George Pyne painted this view of the first quad and main gate to Oriel Square looking towards University Church of St Mary the Virgin on several occasions between 1851 through to 1870. Signed and dated, 1854, lower right.
