George Murgatroyd Woodward (1762-1811)
The Boxing Match

Medium: Watercolour
Size without frame: 3.8" x 8.4"
Size including frame: 12.3" x 16.4"
SOLD

George Murgatroyd Woodward was an English Caricaturist and humour writer. He was a drinking friend of Rowlandson who etched from many of his watercolours for publication, apparently including this one according to a note on the work itself. His middle name was also written as 'Moutard' or 'Montard'. Acquired from a private source together with three exceptional Rowlandsons. Very good condition, especially for the age. There is also a label to the rear about Richard Newton who was also a caricaturist of the period but who died aged 21; why this is included is unclear at present.
