Once a social ritual and popular all levels of society taking a pinch of snuff is observed and recorded in marvellous colourful detail by Kilburne in this good-sized watercolour. It might look as if the gentleman's butler is serving him but the title suggests it's member of the clergy offering up his snuff. Often, it seems to us, Kilburne subtly mocks his aristocratic/upper class male subjects but perhaps it is just the case that there was no shortage in supply of pompous looking gentlemen. Good strong colours, signed lower right. Provenance: purchased at Christies lot 11 2nd dec 1932, from the collection of Arthur Huntley Walker, Villa de Sole, San Remo, Italy.
