George Balmer (Attrib.) (1805-1846)
Born in North Shields, Northumberland, Balmer began his career as a decorator in Edinburgh, painting only in his leisure time. Eventually he exhibited in Newcastle and even collaborated with John Wilson Carmichael. Balmer visited Holland, Switzerland and France, subsequently settling in London. He painted many British scenes, many of them featuring stranded ships, lighthouses and mills (Balmer's uncle was a miller at Plessey, near Blyth, Northumberland). He was asked to produce drawings for 'The Ports and Harbours of Great Britain', and many of these were of scenes along the north east coast of England. Balmer is generally regarded as a fine watercolourist and one of Northumbria's outstanding marine painters.
