In lively seas fishing boats sail home to harbour, by the looks of things at some speed. Ellis conveys so well the energy of the sea that the swell looks quite intimidating. The painting came to us with a title 'Off Dover' but having looked at Ellis's output we think the cliffs are more likely to be Yorkshire. Titled on the stretcher, 'Squally waters', this painting was exhibited at the French Gallery, Pall Mall. Signed, lower left.
